Among all the social media platforms, LinkedIn represents a sort of mystery. By definition, it is a professional social networking service, but many people are convinced that its sole purpose to search for jobs and once you have one, it has outlived its usefulness. Hence the numerous inactive profiles.

 

Well, I’ve never gotten a job via LinkedIn (never really searched either) and I hadn’t been an active member of the network until this June. I was, like many others, reluctant about the value that it can provide beyond looking for a new job. But when you become an entrepreneur, business networking becomes your top priority, or at least it should.

 

Following my own advice, I brought myself to start using LinkedIn regularly. First, I joined groups that sounded intriguing, then followed some so-called influencer (top industry leaders). My opinion based on the first couple of weeks was: not impressed (and I’m being very generous here). Looked like nothing more than a pool of articles that you can find anywhere on the internet, no more no less. I couldn’t see any added value or wow factor (web design slang…my bad) that would make me a fun or an avid user.

 

I don’t want to sugarcoat it, I was bored out of my mind. Until one day, I came across an article that had nothing to do with business. It was a very personal writing of David J. D’Silva about shame and vulnerability. The piece was full of emotion, personal memories and hit very close to home. Yet, it felt so unfit to the LinkedIn I’d known.

 

I was confused and started to question my view of the network, so I dug deeper to see if there were more articles like that. Apparently, yes. Countless of writings and connections later I realized that there is another side of LinkedIn where you can read inspirational articles about not only business, but life and everything comes along with that. Where people simply share their thoughts even if those are not closely related to attracting customers and making money, and they do so just for the sake of sharing and maybe to encourage others.

 

Now, I read a lot…a lot on LinkedIn. I even have to schedule my time spent daily on the site otherwise I would lost just read the whole day. My favorite group with real pearls is The Unfluencers who define the group as follows:

 

The word “fluence” means mysterious, magical, or hypnotic power. We want to unfold the mysterious and magical mind of our honest members. So, we use the word “un-fluence” or “unfluence” by which we mean to open our mind and write, comment, share freely without any inhibition or barrier.

 

Even if your first encounter with LinkedIn is dull at best, don’t give up just yet. Keep looking and you will find your kind of articles because the possibilities are endless. I guarantee they will make you think, laugh or cry.
