Cats are the stars of the internet, and this cannot be denied. Hardly can I go through my social media updates without seeing a video, an image or a meme about them. And I haven’t even mentioned yet all the groups, blogs and forums dedicated to these pets.
For those who love cats, it must be a heaven on Earth. But for those, who are not crazy about them, it remains a total mystery. I increase the number of the latter group. I just don’t get it and being a control freak (as my family calls me) I needed an answer. There are many theories about the reason why cats have conquered the internet, and I have picked the below two to provide you some sort of explanation.
Cats’ indifference a crowd-pleaser – The article is based on a research concluded by Dr O’Meara, which claims that watching cats unaware being filmed “gives the viewer the illusion of voyeuristically catching a glimpse of a self-sufficient world”.
Why Do Cats Run the Internet? A Scientific Explanation – This piece focuses more on the biological root of the overwhelming success of such videos stating that “their big eyes, smallish noses, and dome-shaped heads trigger the evolutionary nurturing instincts that we have evolved toward babies”. In addition, the internet also serves as a medium for cat owners to try to eliminate the prejudice of perceiving them as ‘cat ladies’ (lonely, weird lady with countless pets).
Since I don’t feel an irresistible urge to watch cat videos, probably I am not the best person to decide which explanation has more merit. However, I incline to believe the theory of evolutionary predisposition.
What do you think the reason is?
